History & Heritage

  • Sandwich is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the UK. Within the old town walls many period houses with characteristic "Kent peg" roofs, are laid out in a way which has changed little since the Doomsday book in 1086.
  • The fabulous Cathedral City of Canterbury has a whole host of history and heritage to discover including two castles, six museums, St Augustine's Abbey and the Cathedral itself
  • Whitstable (20 miles) has a rich maritime history and is famous for its oysters

Dover Castle
Spectacularly situated above the White Cliffs of Dover this magnificent castle has guarded our shores from invasion for 20 centuries - and now you can enjoy a great family day out at any time since its open all year and is just a 15 minute drive away.

Walmer Castle
Built during the reign of King Henry VIII, Walmer Castle is another fascinating visitor attraction just a short drive away. Originally part of a chain of coastal defences it evolved into the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.

Goodnestone Park Gardens - 5 miles
Created by generations of the FitzWalter family who have lived here since they built the house. The gardens have been brought to their present level of acclaimed quality during the last forty years and are now open to the public.

Turner Contemporary
An art gallery in Margate, delivering world-class exhibitions of contemporary and historical art, events and activities. Admission is free.

Golfing

With three Open Golf Championship venues nearby, as well as several other great courses, our golfing guests are spoilt for choice.

Royal St. George's Golf Club - 1 miles, host to The Open Championship 14 times since it was founded and most recently in 2011 when Irishman Darren Clarke lifted The Claret Jug, is truly one of the world's greatest courses and is the top course in England.

Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club - 4 miles

Prince's Gold Club - 3 miles
Having hosted The Open Championship in 1932, won by the great American player, Gene Sarazen. Prince's boasts 27 holes Shore, Dunes and Himalayas and retains superb Links conditions all year round, a must for all Links lovers.

Other courses include Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club - 6 miles
Challenging 18 hole course set atop the White Cliffs of Dover.

St. Augustine's Golf Club - 6 miles
A century old club with some tight challenging holes.

Nature & Wildlife

For wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, there are many places to visit in the local area.

Howletts Wild Animal Park - 12 miles
90 acres of beautiful ancient parkland. Visitors come to see the tiger enclosures, gorillas, clouded leopards, monkeys, tapirs, giant anteaters and more!

Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory - 1 mile
Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory has been recording all aspects of the wildlife in Sandwich Bay for over 50 years. At the centre of this is the Field Centre, officially opened in September 2002 by Bill Oddie.
